Apple Introduces iBrick

An Apple software update is disabling iPhones that have been unlocked by owners who wanted to choose which mobile network to use.Earlier this week Apple said a planned update would leave the device “permanently inoperable”.

Thousands of iPhone owners hacked their expensive gadget in order to unlock it for use with other mobile carriers and to run a host of unsupported programs.

There are also reports of the update causing issues with unaltered iPhones.

On Monday Apple issued a statement in which it said many of the unauthorised iPhone unlocking programs caused “irreparable damage” to the device’s software.

The company said this would “likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed”.

That warning has now proved correct as many owners are reporting their phones no longer work following installation of the update.

Apple requires iPhone owners to take out a lengthy contract with AT&T in the United States but there are a number of programs on the net that unlock the device for use with other networks.

Some owners are reporting on technology blogs and Apple’s own forums that the update is deleting contacts information, as well as photos and music, on iPhones that have not been modified in any way.

YouTube Adding 30-second Ads

Search engine and internet giant Google has announced a new kind of video advertising format for YouTube, to begin next year.

Google acquired the video sharing website last year for $1.65 billion, predicting that video would be the next big thing in internet advertising.

Now Google’s Patrick Walker has revealed that the company is working with content providers to produce 30-second advertisements that will run before content is viewed on YouTube, VNUnet reports.

The revenue produced would then be shared between YouTube and the broadcaster. This will see “real money coming in” from video advertising, he said.

It is unclear how YouTube’s users will react to adverts before the clips, but the announcement signifies the immense popularity of internet advertising and comes soon after Google’s acquisition of online advertising firm DoubleClick for $3.1 billion.

DoubleClick will give Google a massive presence in the display ad market, traditionally dominated by rival Yahoo.

Display ads allow users to click through to corporate websites in order to make online purchases. The more links there are to a certain site, the more prominence it gains on search engines such as Google.

As the BBC points out, “essentially, the web is a collection of pages, all linking to each other One of the most important factors in deciding how relevant particular sites are is to count how many other sites link to it”.

Ugh, It’ll be Interesting to see how this plays out…

FOX Sets 24 Season Seven Premier Date – And Announces A MAJOR Return

FOX has just issued a press release announcing the sventh season premier of its real-time hit “24”.The show will, like in the previous three years start its seventh season with a two-night event on Sunday, January 13 at 8PM with the first two episodes, and will air another episode on Monday, January 14 in its regular timeslot of 9PM.

And guess who will return to the show?

The innovative, addictive, Emmy Award-winning television series 24 resets the clock for Season Seven with a special two-night premiere event Sunday, Jan. 13 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) and Monday, Jan. 14 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

In keeping with FOX’s commitment to airing original programming year-round, the intense season will unfold in 24’s regular 9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT time period beginning Monday, Jan. 14, and will continue to air all originals all season into June.

“Day 7” of 24 will continue the show’s unique and trend-setting format with compelling new elements. With CTU dismantled, the show’s setting moves to Washington, DC, where JACK BAUER (Kiefer Sutherland) faces trial for his actions in the pursuit of justice. Bauer’s day gets off to a shocking start when former colleague TONY ALMEIDA (Carlos Bernard), last seen in “Day 5,” returns after being left for dead by a terrorist conspirator in CTU’s infirmary.

“Tony’s uncertain fate near the end of ‘Day 5’ left the door open for his return,” said executive producer/show-runner Howard Gordon. “And since there was no silent clock at the conclusion of his last appearance – the 24 tribute to a major character’s demise – we always kept this as a possibility.”

Bernard’s return highlights a list of notable cast members clocking in for Season Seven, including the previously announced Cherry Jones (“The Heiress”) as President ALLISON TAYLOR and Janeane Garofalo (“The Larry Sanders Show”) as FBI Agent JANIS GOLD. Colm Feore (“Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee”) will play First Gentleman HENRY TAYLOR and Bob Gunton (“Desperate Housewives”) is White House Chief of Staff ETHAN KANIN.

FBI Agents assigned to the team investigating the crisis befalling Bauer include Garofalo’s Agent Gold in addition to Annie Wersching (“General Hospital”) as Agent RENEE WALKER, Jeffrey Nordling (“Dirt”) as Agent LARRY MOSS and Rhys Coiro (“Entourage”) as Agent SEAN HILLINGER. John Billingsley (PRISON BREAK) portrays security specialist MICHAEL LATHAM. Although CTU is no longer, CHLOE O’BRIAN (Mary Lynn Rajskub) and BILL BUCHANAN (James Morrison) are back for another momentous day of shocking events.

I’ve never seen so much Bullshit. Howard Gordon needs to be shot.

why the fuck are they bringing tony back? No one wants to see tony. tony was the most un-charismatic and un-likeable character in 24. I never liked tony and it’s not changing now. this is retarded and as a hardcore 24 fan, this pisses me off with the passion of five hells. 24 season 6 was horrible and this follow-up season isn’t looking any better either 😐

WTF is wrong with Japan!
